As a Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) practitioner, you know the importance of personal development. After all, helping your clients achieve success is exactly what you do. But it can be easy to neglect your own skills when you are so focused on helping others. Professional development is important in any career, but doubly so when you are responsible for coaching other people. Keep your NLP skills sharp by making sure you carve out time for your own growth. It is a good idea to dedicate at least a few hours of every working week to your continuing professional development (CPD). Here are our three top tips for keeping your NLP skills up to date.

1. Make time to read

We don't mean your favourite fiction author (although making time for relaxation is always good too), but professionally written articles, books, and journals by your fellow NLP practitioners. However well you feel your own practice is going, you can always learn more by reading the thoughts and experiences of others. It is also a great way of keeping up with new thinking and techniques. Make notes as you go and think about how you can incorporate anything you learn into your own NLP practice.

2. Network and build a professional community

Like reading, networking with other coaches and NLP practitioners gives you an opportunity to learn from how others use NLP in their work. Since many of us coaches and trainers work as sole practitioners, we rely on colleagues from other practices to share knowledge and keep our skills sharp. Even when we can’t meet in person, online networking opportunities offer chances to connect with other NLP practitioners. You’ll be surprised by how much you can learn from a casual conversation with someone who also works in the NLP field.

3. Get a professional certification

Being professionally certified doesn’t just give your clients more confidence in your abilities – it also gives you access to training and networking opportunities. Being part of a wider organisation reminds you of the importance of developing your professional skills, links you to a community of other NLP practitioners, and supports you in reaching success in your NLP practice. Membership of the iGNLP is a great way to commit to your professional development and make sure your NLP skills are up to date.
